Tribute from Dr. Jayant Karania

Today, I stand here before you extremely aggrieved and in deep shock and grief. Cruel hands of death have snatched from among us, two humble soft spoken and remarkable human beings. Jayantilal Shamji Vaja (popularly known as Babubhai Shah) and Mrs. Savitaben were well-respected elders of our community. Babubhai and Savitaben were aged 78 years and 76 year respectively. Babubhai settled in Nakuru in 1964 – almost 48 years ago. He was an exemplary individual who proved that a person from humble and ordinary background and with a modest education can climb the ladder of success with sheer hard work and commitment. He sacrificed his own ambitions for further education for the sake of his brothers and sister and joined the family business at a very young age. Once he established himself and family successfully in business in Nakuru, he dedicated himself whole heartedly to the service of larger humanity. He had a very special inherent knack for bonding and connecting with people from all walks of life, of whatever age and from any background, irrespective of race, creed or colour of skin. He knew how to build and nurture friendships. That was in his blood. He served not just Oshwal Community or Asian Community but everyone. He always put interests of society as a whole before anything else. His exemplary contribution to Visa Oshwal Community – Nakuru (as a trustee and chairman for many years) as well as Oshwal Education and Relief Board of East Africa (of which he was a trustee) speak volumes about his love for education. He always spoke, dreamt and thought of education. He always believed in strong team work and strived to bring out the best talents from co-workers. Whether at Rotary Club’s social and charitable activities or under the banner of Oshwal Organisations or Hindu Council of Kenya, his primary goal was to improve the lives of hundreds of poor families who had no access to water, education, shelter or enough food or medical facilities. He was also chairman o Nakuru Business Association. I recall with nostalgia his tireless and sustained efforts in feeding and sheltering thousands of IDP (during the tragic aftermath of post election violence in 2008) in Nakuru Town. He was awarded a medal by the President in recognition of his services. He even sat with me, just six days before his death, discussing his dreams how to enhance infrastructures in poorly equipped primary schools in every county and how our families and organisations can sponsor such projects. In spite of his advanced age, his never ending love for social work endeared himself to many friends in various NGO’s. He leaves a legacy of hard work, commitment to fellow beings and working for betterment of lives of thousands of peoples. Let me put this message before the younger generation of Shamji Vaja family and indeed to all of you, that Babubhai (J.S. to many of his fellow social workers) has lit thousands of candles for charitable and social activities to improve the lives of the poorest among the poor. His untimely and sad departure is not just a loss to the family but for all of us who value his unique and immortal contribution through his actions, his words, his inspiration and motivation and above all his generous financial assistance to many. We all shall miss him. Indeed, the true worth of an individual is not in taking from society but in giving to society. He proved this by his dreams, visions, actions and devotions to family, fellow Oshwals and all others around us in the society. Life of such an individual should be celebrated. And never forget, he was able to do all this with moral support and encouragement from his wife, Mrs. Savitaben. Let us pray almighty to bestow the eternal peace to the departed souls of Babubhai and Savitaben.
